20 October marks World Osteoporosis Day each year. Osteoporosis is often described as the “silent disease”, presenting no obvious symptoms until a fracture occurs. Orthopaedic specialists Dr Ophelia Wan highlights in am730 health column: Every year about 7,000 elderly people in Hong Kong are admitted to hospital for surgery following a hip fracture. The mortality rate from hip fractures is significant and should not be underestimated.
